Basic Operation of Eagle X-Ray
This tutorial video gives an overview of how to operate the Eagle X-ray system, including safety features (emergency stops and interlocks), steps for starting, resetting, and normalizing the machine, and signal light indicators.
Safety System
The main safety circuit of the machine stops the x-ray and conveyor if any emergency stop is pushed, or any interlock is opened. The emergency stops, or e-stops, are large red buttons that lock when pressed and must be unlatched by turning or pulling. A pressed e-stop is indicated by the amber fault lamp on the stack light and on the HMI. After resetting the switch, the machine can be reset and started by pushing the stop and run buttons in sequence.
There are several magnetic and keyed interlock switches on panels and doors throughout the machine. An interlock that is open will be indicated by the amber fault lamp and on the HMI. After locating the indicated interlock and closing it, the machine can be restarted by pushing the stop and run buttons in sequence.
Signal/Stack Light
The system is equipped with a pedestal signal light that may be seen from 360 degrees around the machine. The top section is the red X-RAY ON light that indicates when X-rays are being generated. Under normal operation, this light will be on. During the Normalize calibration procedure, this light will go off and on under command of the computer.
The middle section is the amber FAULT light. When solidly illuminated, it means that there is an issue with the machine that will not allow operation until corrective actions are taken. A blinking amber FAULT light indicates an inspection fault condition, such as a reject verification error or a misaligned photo-eye. There is a list of the potential faults in the Eagle manuals. In all cases, a balloon message is shown on the screen explaining the fault problem.
The bottom section is the green RUNNING light that indicates the computer system is running. This light flashes once per second upon power on until the system is fully booted, then stays on steady green. The light flashes once every 2 seconds during post key switch turnoff until the operating system and computer is fully shut down in an orderly fashion.
Power On/Off
The system is equipped with a Mains Power Switch. This shutoff removes all power from the system, but whenever servicing the interior of the unit, or working on the conveyor, you should ensure that the power is removed at the main power switch and the internal UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is switched off for the service provided. This Mains Power Switch must be on to operate the system.
For normal use, the machine is designed to run from the computer screen and nearby control switches. The key switch supplies power to the inspection systems when in the ON position. Even when the Key Switch is turned off, there is still primary power applied to certain devices in the system.
Basic Controls
The green RUN button is used to begin operation by starting the conveyor and energizing the x-ray. Every time the system is started from a stop, a warm-up period will begin during which no product should be in the machine. After the warm-up, the machine will normalize automatically. The warm-up can by skipped by pressing OK to normalize immediately or CANCEL to use the last good normalization.
The STOP/RESET button will stop the conveyor, and de-energize the X-ray beam. It will also reset the safety system if all conditions are met. The first time the machine is started after power on, the STOP/RESET button must be pressed to reset the safety system before the RUN button will work.
These controls are the only controls required for normal day-to-day repetitive operation of these systems. The video display and the keyboard are primarily of use during setup or changes to a product line. For normal daily use, the machine is designed to be plug-and-play with a simple POWER ON – CALIBRATE – VERIFY – RUN routine.
Summary
1. Turn the key switch to the ‘On’ position. After about a minute, the machine will boot up to the SimulTask software.
2. Once SimulTask appears on the screen, press the STOP/Reset button once. This will reset the safety interlock system.
3. Press the START button once to start the conveyor and supply power to the x-ray generator. DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THE MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE SCREEN. Allow the message to count down the 30-minute warm-up period until the machine has normalized. Once this procedure is complete, you can start production.
