Silos
ABM Equipment provides silo sales and servicefor food, chemical, and nutraceutical applications. ABM Equipment handles process engineering, mechanical engineering, integration, and service for silos, as well as our own custom leak-proof gates. We will design your system, help navigate zoning and seismic requirements, and find creative ways to satisfy or avoid other municiple requirements.
Common Applications
We provide ingredient storage silos for many manufacturers and co-packers. Though most of our clientele are producers of food and petfood products, silo specifications are nearly identical for other products as well. For this reason we also provide silos to plastics and chemical manufacturers.
- Flour: The most common use-case for silos we provide are for flour for bakeries and other finished goods. Common customers produce crackers, cereals, baby food, chips, pastas and noodles, bagels, desserts, baking mixes, etc. Though dehumidifiers will be used for these applications occasionally, flour is usually consumed too quickly for this to be an issue.

- Whole Grains: The second most common application is for whole grains for millers, brewers, distillers, and other food producers. For example, food bar manufacturers will use them for oats and other grains, and bakeries will store whole grain when they have their own mill. For a write-up that was originally for breweries and applicable to all whole grains, go here. This writeup includes the pros and cons of corrugated silos. Our leak-proof gates are also necessary in these applications to prevent fines from leaking out and attracting pests.
- Sand: Coming in third are silos for sand, which is used for building materials like concrete, cement, and glass. Leak-proof gates are not necessary for these applications.
- Manufacturing Waste: Silos for the storage of waste can come with a number of features specific to the application. Dewatering centrifuges can be placed on top of the silo, the silo can be placed on long legs to allow a truck to drive under it, and a screw conveyor can be mounted for easy unloading. When the waste is organic, like spent grain, the silo will usually be stainless steel to prevent rusting. The first image in the gallery below is an example of this.
- Green Coffee: We provide silos to many coffee roasters in the western hemisphere. Like the companies we provide silos to for grains, we also provide coffee producers handling and bagging systems for the rest of their process.
- Chemicals: We also provide silos to chemical manufacturers and those needing chemicals for the products they produce.
- Plastics: Finally, we provide silos for pelletized plastics to be used in the manufacturing of many different products. Silos being used for plastics require no special features unless in an extreme environment.
