Turning Eagle X-Ray On & Off
This tutorial video gives an overview of pre-start checks, how to power up Eagle X-ray machines, prime them for use, and how to turn them off for production, maintenance, and quality assurance personnel. Transcript below.
Pre-Operation Checks
Before turning on the x-ray and using it in production, walk around the cabinet and follow these steps to ensure the machine is in good operating condition.
Verify that the machine is being supplied with power from the mains connection. Typically, that just means checking that the main disconnect is ‘on.’
At the infeed and outfeed sides of the machine, check the condition of the shielding curtains. If there is damage on any part of the curtains, DO NOT TURN THE MACHINE ON!!! Before you go any further, check with the Radiation Safety Officer. The curtains may need to be repaired. Please contact the ABM x-ray parts department if you need you order new curtains.
At the front of the machine, check that no product is in the tunnel before the machine is started. The machine needs about 30 minutes to warm up and normalize. This means that you should not start running products until the machine is ready. Product stuck in the tunnel may interfere with normalization. We ‘ll explain more about normalization in a moment.
Test that all doors and end louvers are closed and secured everywhere on the machine. Verify that the conveyor is in the machine and that belt is in operable condition.
Now that we have completed the walk around, we are ready to start the machine with the key switch on the control panel.
How To Power the Machine
Turn the switch to the ‘ON’ position. The GREEN stack light on top of the unit will blink during boot-up. The green light will stay on continuously once Simultask x-ray software has started.
If the machine does not turn on in response to the key switch, DO NOT REPEATEDLY TURN THE KEY. Have an authorized user check that the UPS, Computer, and monitor are on inside the cabinet.
Push the STOP/Reset button to reset the safety system.
Press the conveyor START button. A warm-up phase begins, as indicated by the yellow bubble. This warm-up phase lasts 30 minutes. You do not have to do anything, as the machine will normalize automatically at the end of this period. During normalization, the x-ray generator is switched on and off briefly to calibrate the x-ray detectors. You can tell if the x-ray generator is turned on by observing the red ‘x-ray on’ light on top of the machine
After normalization, a green running stick figure will appear near the bottom of the screen to indicate that the machine is ready to inspect.
The 30-minute warm-up is recommended after any significant shut down. This warm-up message will also appear any time the machine is started from a stop. However, a shorter warm-up time can be used for shorter interruptions. For example, stopping the machine for less than three minutes probably only needs a 10 second warm-up. To skip the full timer, either press OK to perform another normalization, or press Cancel to continue without normalizing again.
How To Power Down the Machine
If you would like to turn off the machine, it is recommended to leave the main power on! It supplies power to the air conditioning unit. If it is turned off, condensation can occur inside the cabinet. Instead, please press the STOP/Reset button, then turn the key switch to the OFF position.
The computer will begin to shut down. DO NOT TURN THE KEYSWITCH BACK ON WHILE THE MACHINE IS POWERING DOWN. The green stack light will begin to blink, and then turn off once the shutdown is complete. It takes about 2 minutes for the machine to turn off completely. The key can be removed to disable the machine.
If you would like to fully power down the machine for maintenance or storage, leave the key switch on and simply turn the main disconnect to the off position.
The UPS will sense the loss of power and shut down the computer and then itself after a few minutes. Once power is restored by turning the main disconnect back on, the UPS and computer will restart as normal.
If the key is already off when you turn the disconnect off, the UPS will not turn off automatically. This can result in a discharged battery which will make start up difficult. Please turn off the UPS manually in this case.
